The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services earlier this month confirmed the discovery of the snail, which is described as "one of the most damaging snails in the world." It is known to consume at least 500 different types of plants and can cause extensive damage to tropical and subtropical environments. It can also carry a dangerous parasite and even meningitis, making it dangerous to humans.
Under the quarantine, it is illegal to move the snail or any plants, compost, soil, or building materials from the quarantine area. The area is currently being treated with a pesticide. (The Guardian)
