Mountain Of Clothes In Chile So High, It Can Be Seen From Space

A mountain of discarded clothing in Chile has become so huge, it can now be seen from space. Chile's Atacama plateau, which happens to be the driest non-polar desert in the world, houses the landfill where much of the West’s faulty clothing goes to die. The pile now weighs around 59,000 tons.

Who cares about a pile of clothes? A spokesperson for SkyFi, a company that puts out satellite images, says this is a huge deal for the environment. “The size of the pile and the pollution it's causing is visible from space, making it clear that there is a need for change in the fashion industry.” The pollution is mainly caused by chemicals in synthetic clothing that could take up to 200 years to biodegrade. Turns out fast fashion is actually pretty slow…and dangerous.
