Kick off your Sunday shoes, Fort Smith, Arkansas. You are finally allowed to dance again.
City officials have repealed an ordinance that had been on the books since 1953 and outlawed public dancing on Sundays. The ordinance had become known as the "Footloose ordinance," after the Kevin Bacon movie about a town that banned dancing and rock music.
- The ordinance was part of a series of blue laws established in 1953 that also banned all sales on Sundays, as well as activities like hunting and baseball.
The truth is, most people weren't even aware of the ordinance until one resident found it and brought it to the attention of the city director, who proposed the repeal. A spokesperson for the city said that no one had been arrested or ticketed for violating the law in two decades. (Arkansas Online)
