The U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Northwest had an unusual and heartwarming rescue on New Year's Day when they saved a family's dog.
Leo the pooch fell off seaside cliff on the Oregon Coast and onto a beach down below. Local rescue personnel were ready to rappel down to try to get him when the Coast Guard chopper showed up. The crew lowered a rescue swimmer and a basket down.
The swimmer approached Leo slowly at first to be sure not to spook him. But he got the pup into the basket, and the crew hauled both of them back up.
Leo's owners later said that he spent the night at the vet with some cuts and bruises, but that he should recover just fine.
