There have been reports that newly-engaged George Clooney is preparing to take another big step: running for governor of California.

But is it true? E! News‘ Ken Baker called in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest on Friday morning to clarify the rumors.

“I cannot confirm or deny the reports,” he told us. “This has been a rumor that has been bouncing around for a long time. In fact, I went back in my reports because I remember reporting on this several years ago when Arnold Schwarzenegger was stepping down as governor as California. There was talk like, ‘Oh, well perfect we’ll put in another actor.’ I remember looking into it and there was no chance it was going to happen.”

So then what has changed now and why is the idea coming up once again?

“He’s still very politically active and still really into major social and political issues, but because he’s getting married now, there’s this theory out there he’s more electable because he’ll be settled down and he won’t be this high-flying bachelor,” explains Ken of the actor, who proposed to lawyer Amal Alamuddin in April. “But I checked into it … there’s no truth that he is running or has plans to run for governor.”

Until it’s true, fans can watch George’s 2011 film, The Ides of March, in which he played the governor of Pennsylvania!
