Watch Liam Payne Perform 'Strip That Down' On 'Jimmy Fallon' (VIDEO)

Liam Payne performed “Strip That Down” on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Wednesday.

“Strip That Down” is Payne’s long-awaited and highly-anticipated first solo single. Though One Direction went on hiatus in late 2015, the British superstar only teased snippets of his new music before releasing this song in May. The track was co-written by Ed Sheeran and Quavo. The rapper, best known as a member of Migos, is featured on the recording as a collaborator.

“We went in, sat around and discussed a bunch of things about life, and [the song] basically just came together,” Payne said about writing with Sheeran in an interview for Billboard last month. Quavo was later added to the mix, with Payne revealing he “turned the rap around in like 24 hours.” Some Directioners took issue with the lyric “You know, I used to be in 1D/Now I’m out, free,” but the former “X Factor” contestant has insisted he didn’t intend it as a diss.

Still, he has described the song’s vibe and its content as “edgy,” and it is sonically a departure from the group that made him world famous. The performance on “The Tonight Show” marks Payne’s first time singing “Strip That Down” on television in the United States. He follows Niall Horan, who hung out with Fallon on an episode nearly a month ago. Former band mate Zayn Malik also debuted new music on “The Tonight Show” last year, as Gossip Cop reported.

While “Strip That Down” has reached number 3 on the UK Singles Chart, it hasn’t had similar success in America. That could change, however, with increased exposure from television performances. In addition to performing for Fallon’s audience, Payne also joined fellow “Tonight Show” guests Vanessa Hudgens and Ashton Kutcher for a game called “Secret Ingredient.” Gossip Cop has the videos above!
